African animal series

I've finished the last of a little series of African plains animals. Elephants, zebras, and giraffes. It was a fun challenge drawing a completely new set of animals and habitat.

  1. These are all excellent but I especially love the giraffes and the squiggly sun.

I'm always thrilled when your posts pop up in my feed reader, and you inspired me to start fooling around with watercolours. Thanks!

    1. That's so cool! Good luck with the painting - I'm happy to answer any watercolor questions if you have them.
      Glad you liked the giraffes.

  2. I really like the style of these. They are cute and look like something from a children's book. Can i know what is used for the lines, is it also watercolor? They look so solid. My favorite one is the zebra one.
I draw mostly with pencil and would like to color a lot of them, I have a hard time choosing colors and i don't feel confident using them. I have use acrylic or gouache in the past. How is watercolor different from that?
I haven't tried watercolors seriously for my drawings but i would want to use them. I have been thinking about using them for a while but they seem messy to work with. Do you have any tips for how to use watercolors or helpful things to know? I especially like the field combination. I have a difficult time mixing on adding paint to the first layer.

    1. Thanks! The lines are drawn in India Ink.
Watercolors are a bit different. They are transparent and washes can be layered for effect. Their are different techniques you can use to get different effect, like wet on wet, wet on dry, drybrush, etc. I would say just have fun, experiment, and see what works for you. A book on watercoloring might help to give you ideas and and a basic understanding the different techniques.

  3. Hello there, I stumbled across you amazingly adorable art. I was wondering if you sell digital copies? I'm moving to Africa and I am working with poverty alleviation through job creation. One of the things we do is send updates to supporters. Many of our supporters have children and we are sending them their own newsletter with stories of kids in African, but Im looking to create a nice template. NOT something with poverty pornography! We are working in Uganda and they are beautiful people in a beautiful country. I would love to use your images in my template. Would you be interested in selling digital formate? thank you Debbie Nutzmann~
